Cute Diggle PlushieBy now everyone knows how much fun I think Dungeons of Dredmor is. Those of you wanting reviews, I plan to do one once the Conquest of the Wizardlands expansion is patched. If you’re new here, I may have established that I’m pretty good at DoD when I murdered Lord Dredmor in an absurdly difficult way, and after doing so there were some events to follow that would lead to me finding a lot of great people in the game community (and having a whole new appreciation for the developer). Among the communities I found were the folks over at /r/Dredmor on Reddit. They started up a weekly Dredmor Challenge which I recently participated in and won (it was close!) So that means this week I get to make the new Reddit Dredmor Challenge! You can see the details here on Reddit/r/Dredmor. If you’re new to Reddit/terrifed of Reddit I’ve reposted the contest here as well so you can participate. (I’ll just post your scores on Reddit for you, either comment here or email me at thecakepie@gmail.com) Read more…

Image is of a badge in the center is a Hang Loose symbol and the outside is decorated with olive leaves and gold stars. The Badge reads: Declared Awesome
I’m about to tell you a story about videogames, kitchens, and internet forums that has a happy ending. Stop laughing, I’m serious.

What happened here has never happened to me before in my life, or to any other woman I have ever heard of, so listen up. Listen well all of you. If you’re a Game Dev or you moderate an internet community, or you’re a bunch of women who know how this usually plays out–no matter who the hell you are I promise you that you’ve never seen this before. Picture of an advice meme, young boy holding a game controller in the center of the image, with text on top that reads: sees girl online. And text on the bottom that reads: 'Make me a sandwich' trololol damn I'm cleverAs you know, yesterday I owned the shit out of Dungeons of Dredmor. The stats on Steam say only 1% of players have beaten the game on Going Rogue w/Permadeath, and 0.6% have beaten it on any difficulty with a random build. Even though there are no stats for the overlap, I may be the only person in the world who has beaten the game on BOTH (GR/PD + random).

Even still, apparently, to this helpless starving infant on the Gaslamp Games forum my only role is making kitchen food for baby boys who still can’t do it themselves. Read more…

The image is an illustration of the female hero from Dungeons of Dredmor covered in blood holding an ax and looking worn from battle.A while back, I explained roguelikes here on Cake-pie, and one of the titles I mentioned was Dungeons of Dredmor (it was also on sale a few times). This morning at 4:26am “Carl Sagan” and I beat it on the hardest setting, and with a random skill build (the computer picks 7 random skills for you). That means that when I created the character, I left my entire chances to win to the computer to decide at random. Permadeath means that when you die, you’re dead. If you saved the game at any point, your save game is deleted. You cannot return to life. BALEETED. Read more…

Steam SalesI know you’re all still playing Diablo 3 (myself included) but today the game is down for maintenance so I spent some time going through Steam cataloging some deals. Steam is a convenient portal for downloading and buying games because it always seems to have deals (and not just on crapware, but on games that you’ll want to play) and it’s a great way to get access to indy games. You can also friend other people (it’s linked to Facebook so you can find your friends) and then you can judge compare games and achievements with each other. I ask my friends about games they’ve played to see if they’re anything I want to try out, plus there’s a handy chat system so you can talk in real time. Chances are you already know all of this stuff, but I try to write for everyone here so that people who are not experts can learn new stuff. Read more…
