I’m about to tell you a story about videogames, kitchens, and internet forums that has a happy ending. Stop laughing, I’m serious.

What happened here has never happened to me before in my life, or to any other woman I have ever heard of, so listen up. Listen well all of you. If you’re a Game Dev or you moderate an internet community, or you’re a bunch of women who know how this usually plays out–no matter who the hell you are I promise you that you’ve never seen this before. Image is of a young, battered Lara Croft with a bow slung over her and tying a bandage on her upper arm using her teeth to tighten the bandage. She is dirty, bruised, and the background is bleak and foggy. There’s a lot of talk right now in the videogame community about reactions to the Tomb Raider reboot trailer seen at E3. It’s especially interesting because it intersects with the topic of women in games (in their portrayal, development, and stories as well as some meta concepts). I was reading some of the predictable responses with extreme boredom, until I got to the Escapist Magazine’s op-ed by Susan Arendt. Read more…

Steam SalesI know you’re all still playing Diablo 3 (myself included) but today the game is down for maintenance so I spent some time going through Steam cataloging some deals. Steam is a convenient portal for downloading and buying games because it always seems to have deals (and not just on crapware, but on games that you’ll want to play) and it’s a great way to get access to indy games. You can also friend other people (it’s linked to Facebook so you can find your friends) and then you can judge compare games and achievements with each other. I ask my friends about games they’ve played to see if they’re anything I want to try out, plus there’s a handy chat system so you can talk in real time. Chances are you already know all of this stuff, but I try to write for everyone here so that people who are not experts can learn new stuff. Read more…

diablo3Hey, so you’ve been playing D3? Have you been hating on it? Is your big complaint that Diablo 3 is dumbed-down and forces you to play with only some specific skills, and only in certain hotkeys? This game isn’t customizable and boy does that suck! If that’s how you feel about it, well, you just didn’t know how to customize it.

Instead, try this new tip. I mean, maybe you figured it out yourself but this option is buried rather cleverly so I’m guessing you didn’t figure it out, and this is going to make a difference in your gameplay experience. Read more…

Carmageddon

Censored and banned all over the place when it was released for the PC in 1997 (and not just based on this amazing cover art) Carmageddon still managed to wow gamer audiences and drove itself into sequel: Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now.

Now I’m not just impressed by a game’s controversy. If you’ve actually played Carmageddon (please not on the N64) you know its glory. This game is just so good. I mean, you can run over people, you can do sweet tricks with the various ramps, you can race like a care bear and try not to die trying to place first, or you can just try to kill your opponents. In C2 you can make all the people have really huge heads. It’s magic. Read more…
