Skin79 The Oriental Gold BB Cream Review Packaging 277x300 Skin 79 The Oriental Gold BB Cream ReviewWhen I first I learned about BBs I did a lot of research, I read a TON of reviews (both domestic and foreign) and this product kept coming up. I bought it because I wanted to start out with a good quality BB cream rather than randomly experiment, and overall I was glad I did. If you’re new to BB creams, it might be good to start by reading about what they are, as there are no truly analogous western products.

Skin79 is a large brand from South Korea, but it’s more popular and well-known in the west in that it’s a big deal here, and not so much in South Korea. Most women outside of Asia try a Skin79 brand for their first BB cream, but most women in BB-popular countries aren’t as into Skin79. It’s not an inferior brand, personally I think the difference in popularity is a matter of marketing because Skin79 spends a lot of time enticing the foreign market.

After trying many, many BBs now, I can say The Oriental Gold is one of my favorites. The coverage is light to medium depending on how much you build up but it is far less than most foundations so if you’re new to BB’s you should know that coverage is not as heavy. Also, you don’t put so much on! The most common mistake I see with people trying BB cream is people caking it on and being like “ERMAGHERD This crap is SO THICK.” It’s not their fault, maybe no one showed them how to put on a BB Cream. Protip: use a smallllll amount to start. If it’s not enough coverage, apply another small amount after you’re done.

The Oriental Gold is available in either a 40g tube or a 40g cylinder that includes a pretty pink cream blush. I bought the one with the cream blush because I wanted to try it out:

Skin79 The Oriental Gold BB Cream Review Bare Face Skin 79 The Oriental Gold BB Cream Review
Oh no! My bare face is not very pretty. You can see my skin has problems with oil and acne, as well as dullness and discoloration. I’m also starting to win at wrinkles.

Skin79 The Oriental Gold BB Cream Review One Layer Skin 79 The Oriental Gold BB Cream Review
Even with one layer only my skin looks much better. My discoloration is evened out, some of my acne is covered, and my eyes look awake and brightened, but I still look very clean and natural.

Skin79 The Oriental Gold BB Cream Review Two Layers Skin 79 The Oriental Gold BB Cream Review
With two layers you can see that the color is building nicely, most of my problems are covered and my overall skin looks much nicer. The glow is subtle, and for those who don’t like it either a blotting tissue or a powder on top can help.

Skin79 The Oriental Gold BB Cream Review Finished Look Skin 79 The Oriental Gold BB Cream Review
My finished look with two layers of The Oriental Gold, the cheek tint it came with, Tarina Tarantino lip gloss in Parade, Julep lengthening mascara in Espresso Brown, on my waterline and inner eye corner I’m wearing Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Shadow Pencil in Sin, and my eyeshadow is from Coastal Scents Shimmer Palette. I am also wearing Youngblood primer for my face makeup, and Urban Decay Primer Potion for my eye makeup. To cover up the last of my spots I used ELF’s Zit-Zapping concealor in medium.

What I love:

  • Perfect color match! This is nearly unheard of because my skin is so pale and my undertones are strange.
  • It looks very natural. The coverage is nice when built up, but can also be applied lightly enough to be indetectable.
  • The accompanying blush is a sweet color, looks natural, and is a great bonus.
  • Relatively easy to find for an Asian brand, as it is from a brand gaining popularity in the USA
  • Hides my flaws for the most part, a few hardcore pimples still need concealor.
  • Smells fine.
  • If you’re into that sort of thing, it has arbutin which can prevent skin from pigmenting, over time that means it has a “whitening effect.”
  • Non-sticky. Makes my skin glow.
  • Priced well: I found this on Amazon for less than $20 including the shipping.

On the other hand:

  • There are other BB creams that are better at oil control, coverage, and contain fancier ingredients.
  • It only comes in one color: super pale!
  • Some people hate that pump. As for me it wasn’t so much of a problem except that you can’t tell when you’re close to running out of the product.
  • Not very much SPF considering it promotes itself as being an anti-aging formula. While serviceable, it only has SPF 25 PA++.

Bottom Line:
Overall this is one of my favorite BB creams, I use it a lot in the evenings and at night, but not as much during the day because of the low SPF. It matches me like it was made for my skin, which is a big win, as I’m hard to match for. I would repurchase it, but I don’t use it as my HG, instead it’s my back up/secondary choice.

My first BB cream was the skin79 hot pink super triple function. The finish is similar to yours! It was shiny but less oily I think. I almost finished it but then I decided to try the Etude House erm.. the previous one not the precious mineral! I don’t remember the exact name haha. The coverage was higher and finish more matte so I stopped using the super triple function.

The reason I tried that BB cream is exactly what you said. Skin79 promotes their BB creams outside of S. Korea a lot. My skin was better back then and I didn’t need to use concealer as much as I do now. I noticed that BB cream made my skin look better than it was before. Something like restoring and making my skin look better. I want to try it again sometime.

Thank you for the review ^_^)

Yeah this one has a glowy look, it’s more pronounced in the photos because I used a flash close up, but it’s dewy in person. I like a bit of dewiness to prevent the makeup from being noticeable but without blotting your face it can get out of control! I also have oily type skin so that’s something I watch out for.

Skin79 was one of the first BBs I saw when googling around (:

I feel like a lot of BB’s improve the skin too, but if I don’t wash them off well I feel like that might be bad. Normal skin cleansers don’t do a lot to get rid of BB cream, don’t you agree?

    You’re welcome, I love doing reviews ^_^

Yes and I still haven’t got a cleanser for BB cream! I’m a bad girl! lol!

    Tiffany Martin Reply:

Maybe we should put together a review for BB cleansers, they can be pretty hard to remove with normal washes and I’m sure other people have this problem too.

    Eva Reply:

Sounds like a good idea, what do you have in mind?

    Tiffany Martin Reply:

I plan to haul a bunch of new stuff soon, maybe we can collaborate. I’ll email you some ideas later today ^_^

This is one of my favorite BB creams too. It is not the most long lasting one, but it makes my skin look so bright and healthy. It feels really nice on the skin too!

    Tiffany Martin Reply:

Yeah, I find that it lasts better with a primer, without it I have the same problem you have. But I like the glow and the brightness, and it’s definitely natural which I enjoy.

I’ve been wanting to try asian BB creams, but every time I test ‘em out in the store they look way too dark for me! Looks great on you!

    [Reply]

    Tiffany Martin Reply:

Yeah that can be such a pain. I am sick in bed so I can’t try stuff in stores as much, but I read a lot of reviews!

What products have you tried? Any Asian brands? If you’re looking for recommendations stay tuned, I have even more.

This product looks really similar to Skin79′s Diamond Prestige BB cream, but Diamond has a better pump. The first Korean BB cream I’d heard of was Missha… and when I went to go buy it, the Skin79 had a tester and color matched seemed better so I bought both. Turns out they’re very similar and blend in with my skintone perfectly.

I just got several Skin79 BB sample packs, and one is the Gold Oriental…looking forward to trying it. I got an extra sample of their BB cleanser and would happily pass it on to you if you want. I find my cleansing routine is already pretty thorough so I don’t think I need a special cleanser.

    Tiffany Martin Reply:

Yeah I think a lot of the skin79 are pretty similar, I hope to cover them in future posts so people can see the differences.

Where were you able to test the products out? I’m so jelly…

Let me know what you think of the oriental gold (: It’s one of my top fave bbs. Thanks, that’s sweet of you to offer that, maybe we can do a samples swap ^_^

  8. Natasha Says:

A samples swap would be AWESOME! I’m saving my samples for December — when I’m on the road for 3 weeks. Usually travelling isn’t a good time to sample products, but I feel so confident about Skin79 that I am not bringing a full-sized BB.

    Tiffany Martin Reply:

I’ll coordinate some details in email ^_^

Clever to bring samples when you travel, that way you can pack lighter and get past airport security (:
